The Cini family of Zebbug in northern Gozo traditionally harvest salt on salt pans which have been in continuous use since Phoenician times. The pans have been owned by the family for hundreds of years. Now a new generation are taking over responsibility for salt production and as they look to the future they explore the challenges, such as climate change, and the new possibilities, such as renewed interest in old traditional techniques and tourism.
I've always been amazingly proud and deeply affected by the work we have done as a team for If Not Us Then Who. In such a short period of time, we've been able to engage and work with some truly inspiring people across the world and have witnessed these people often encounter great challenges and tragedies in their lives, stuff we could never comprehend. This is one of those stories, tragic as it may be at the beginning, its a story of endurance and perseverance which now magically seems to be paying off and it felt magnificent putting this film together from the reams of material we have recorded over the last five years.
